How to Track Influencer Installs in AppsFlyer

By INFLUENCE · Published October 19, 2026 · 11 min read

To track influencer installs in AppsFlyer, give every creator their own OneLink with the same media source, the campaign name, and the creator’s handle in a lower-level field like the ad set or ad. Turn on a social app landing page so TikTok and Instagram don’t break the link. Then add a promo code and an onboarding question, because the link will only ever catch the people who tap it.

At INFLUENCE, we run creator campaigns for apps every week, and the tracking setup decides whether a campaign looks like a hit or a dud far more often than the creators do. This is the AppsFlyer setup we’d recommend, based on AppsFlyer’s own documentation and what we’ve seen go wrong. If you want the bigger picture on app campaigns first, start with how to promote an app with influencers.

Can AppsFlyer track influencer installs?

Yes, for the installs that come through a link. AppsFlyer’s OneLink is built for exactly this: one smart link that sends iPhone users to the App Store, Android users to Google Play and existing users into the app, while recording which link they came from.

What it can’t do on its own is track the person who watched a creator’s video, didn’t tap anything, and searched your app’s name two days later. That’s most people. Those installs land in AppsFlyer as “organic,” with no creator attached.

So the realistic goal isn’t “AppsFlyer tracks every influencer install.” It’s this:

Can AppsFlyer track influencer installs?
LayerWhat it catchesWhere it shows up
OneLink per creatorPeople who tap and installAppsFlyer, by creator
Promo code per creatorViewers who download on their own time, then redeem the codeYour in-app events
“How did you hear about us?”People who remember where they saw youYour onboarding data
Organic liftEveryone elseAppsFlyer organic installs, compared by date

Duolingo, one of the most successful apps on social, leans on that third layer: its team measures how viral videos lift new users partly through an in-app “How did you hear about us?” question. (The Drum)

Setting up four layers of tracking across 30 creators is fiddly, and it’s usually the part that gets rushed before launch. INFLUENCE gets every creator’s posts and delivered views into one place, so the creator side of your data is already organized when you go to match it against AppsFlyer.

How to set up a OneLink for each creator

In AppsFlyer, go to Engage → OneLink management, choose your OneLink template and click Add link. Pick the Custom link experience, then fill in the media source, campaign and deep linking settings, and generate the link. (AppsFlyer)

The part that matters most is naming. Here’s a structure we like, because it rolls up cleanly in reports:

How to set up a OneLink for each creator
ParameterWhat it isWhat we’d put thereExample
`pid`Media source (required)One custom value for all creators`influencers`
`c`CampaignThe campaign or wave`fall_launch_2026`
`af_adset`Ad setThe platform`tiktok`
`af_ad`AdThe creator’s handle`jess_cooks_atx`
`af_sub1`Sub parameterThe specific video or hook`video2_budget_hook`

Why one media source instead of one per creator? Because you’ll want to see “influencers” as a single channel next to Meta and Google, then drill down to creators. Forty separate media sources make that much harder.

A few AppsFlyer rules to follow, from its link parameter docs:

  • Always include `pid`. Without it, installs are attributed to a “None” source.

  • Pick a case and stick to it. `pid=Influencers` and `pid=influencers` show up as two different sources.

  • No special characters or spaces in `pid`. Characters like `/ < > & ? \` send clicks to `af_invalid_param` and break attribution.

  • Keep campaign names under 100 characters, and the whole URL under 2,000.

Making 30 consistent links is easy to get wrong when the creator list keeps changing. INFLUENCE confirms every creator, platform and posting date up front, so you can generate your links from one clean list instead of a moving target.

How to stop TikTok and Instagram from breaking your links

Turn on a social app landing page for every creator link. TikTok, Instagram and friends usually load a tapped link inside a mini-browser of their own, and AppsFlyer warns that this can block iOS Universal Links from launching your app. Its recommended fix is a social app landing page: a simple page with a button the user taps, which lets the phone hand off properly. (AppsFlyer OneLink FAQ)

A few platform quirks worth knowing, all from AppsFlyer’s documentation:

  • Instagram: links in post captions aren’t clickable at all, so creators need to use their bio link, a story link sticker or a comment pin. On iOS, Instagram doesn’t support opening apps directly, so the landing page matters most here.

  • X: doesn’t support URI schemes, so AppsFlyer suggests a landing page with Universal Links.

  • Short links only: the social app landing page works only with short URLs, so share the short version.

  • No outside shorteners: wrapping a OneLink in another link shortener breaks app opening. Use AppsFlyer’s short links or your own branded domain.

And one testing habit that saves a lot of grief: click the link, don’t paste it. AppsFlyer says pasting a link into a browser’s address bar won’t launch the app. Test by tapping it from inside TikTok, Instagram and every app your creators actually use, on both iPhone and Android.

Testing every creator’s link on every platform before they post is tedious, which is exactly why it gets skipped. On an INFLUENCE campaign, links and codes are part of each creator’s brief and get checked in every draft before it goes live, so a broken link is caught before your launch, not during it.

How to catch installs that never touch the link

Add three things alongside your OneLinks.

1. A promo code per creator. Give each creator a unique code that unlocks something real: a free week, a bonus feature or a discount. When a user redeems it, log it as an in-app event in AppsFlyer with the code as a parameter. That ties the install to the creator, even if they found you by searching the store.

2. An onboarding question. Ask “How did you hear about us?” with options like TikTok, Instagram, YouTube, a friend or “a creator I follow.” Send the answer to AppsFlyer as an in-app event or user attribute. It’s self-reported and messy, but it catches people who never tapped or redeemed anything.

3. Organic lift. Compare daily organic installs during the campaign with the same days in the weeks before. Line up spikes with posting dates. If a creator posts on Tuesday and organic installs jump on Tuesday and Wednesday, that’s not a coincidence.

On iOS, Apple’s App Tracking Transparency limits how much user-level matching any attribution tool can do, so the code and survey layers matter even more there. It’s also worth checking results by platform: AppsFlyer’s 2025 benchmarks found iOS retention was about 46% higher than Android’s in 2024, so a creator whose audience skews iPhone may bring more valuable users. (AppsFlyer)

Matching codes, survey answers and posting dates back to the right creator gets messy fast. INFLUENCE hands you a clean record of who posted what and when, with delivered views for each post, so the lift you see in AppsFlyer is easy to tie back to the creator who caused it.

How to read creator results in AppsFlyer

Start broad, then drill down. Filter your overview by your influencer media source to see the channel as a whole, then group by ad set (platform) and ad (creator).

What to look at, in order:

How to read creator results in AppsFlyer
QuestionWhere to lookWhat good looks like
Which creators sent installs?Overview, grouped by `af_ad`A clear spread, not one creator carrying everything
Did those users stick?Retention or cohort reports by creatorDay 7 and day 30 at or above your app’s average
Did they do anything valuable?In-app events by creator (trial, purchase, sign-up)Events close to your paid channels, or better
Did the whole campaign lift organic?Organic installs by dayA visible bump around posting dates

Then combine it with cost. AppsFlyer won’t know what you paid each creator unless you add it, so keep a simple sheet of creator, cost and posting date, and divide.

For a fuller method, including how to handle the slow trickle of installs weeks after a post, read our ROI measurement guide.

That cost sheet is simpler when you’re paying against one unit. INFLUENCE bills each creator by the 1,000 views their posts actually got, never above the ceiling you chose (pay-per-view, explained), so turning AppsFlyer results into cost per install or cost per retained user is quick division instead of a contract-by-contract hunt.

Common AppsFlyer mistakes with influencer links

Most tracking problems come from a handful of small, avoidable things:

  • One link for everyone. You’ll know creators worked, but not which ones.

  • Inconsistent naming. Mixed capitalization or spellings split one channel into several.

  • Missing `pid`. Installs fall into “None” and can’t be credited.

  • Special characters or spaces in the media source. Clicks end up under `af_invalid_param`.

  • External link shorteners. They break app opening. Use AppsFlyer short links or a branded domain.

  • No social app landing page. In-app browsers quietly eat your iOS installs.

  • Testing by pasting. It won’t behave the way a real tap does.

  • Judging on day three. Many creator-driven installs arrive a week or more after the post.

If you want the creator side handled while your team owns AppsFlyer, that’s a split we see a lot. INFLUENCE runs the creators, briefs, drafts, posting and payouts; you keep full control of your attribution setup.

AppsFlyer can’t see everything a creator does for your app, but set up well, it can see a lot more than most teams realize. Give every creator a clean OneLink, protect it with a landing page, back it up with codes and a survey, and judge results on retention, not just installs. If you’d rather focus on the data and leave the creator logistics to someone else, that’s the job we built INFLUENCE for.

Set up the campaign. Approve the creators and content. INFLUENCE handles the rest.

FAQs

How do I create an influencer tracking link in AppsFlyer?

In AppsFlyer, go to Engage, then OneLink management, select your OneLink template and click Add link. Choose a custom link, set a media source (for example, “influencers”), add the campaign name and the creator’s handle, then generate the link. Make one link per creator.

What media source should I use for influencers in AppsFlyer?

Use one custom, non-integrated media source for all creators, such as “influencers,” and put the creator’s name in a lower-level field like the ad set or ad. That lets you see creators as one channel and still compare individual creators.

Why aren’t my AppsFlyer links opening the app from Instagram or TikTok?

Because social apps load links in an embedded browser, iOS often never gets the signal to open your app. AppsFlyer recommends a social app landing page for this, used with short links and without any outside link shortener.

Can AppsFlyer track installs from people who didn’t click the link?

Not directly. Those installs show up as organic. To credit creators for them, add a unique promo code per creator, ask “How did you hear about us?” during onboarding, and watch for organic install bumps on the days creators post.

How long should I wait to judge influencer installs in AppsFlyer?

Give it at least two to four weeks. Many people install days or weeks after seeing a creator’s video, and day-7 and day-30 retention by creator tell you more than install counts in the first few days.
